Title : Designing and testing an innovative soybean seed grader with oval-hole screen type

Abstract :

In order to improve the performance of the existing soybean seed sorter using the commonly used spherical hole screen type, an innovative sorter using the oval hole screen type was designed and tested. The design process was carried out at the Agricultural Mechanization Laboratory, while the performance testing process was carried out at the Muneng Laboratory of the Legume and Tuber Crops Institute (ILETRI) in Indonesia from January to December 2011. For comparison, a sorter designed using an elliptical hole screen type (hole size: 6,5,4 mm) and a spherical hole screen type (hole size: 6,5,4 mm) was used at both ends and the screen with a screen inclination of 10 °. Spring-supported at both the center. The sorter was driven by a 5.5hp gasoline engine and operated at a pulley speed of 432rpm. The performance of the sorter was evaluated by using large seed size varieties of soybean seeds (Grobogan and Argpmulyo) and medium seed size varieties (Wills). The results show that the sorter (ILETRI sorter) with an elliptical hole screen type (hole size: 6,5,4 mm) was used for both types of soybean seeds (large and medium size) compared to the spherical hole screen type. On the other hand, it was shown that the seed quality grade (Gi) can be increased. The capabilities of the ILETRI sorter were higher for all large seed size varieties: Grobogan (656 kg / hr) and Argpmulyo (678 kg / h) compared to medium seed size varieties: Wills (437 kg / h). Furthermore, by using this sorter, the seed grade can be divided into two grades (G1 and G2) with respect to Grobogan, and the ratio of G1 and G2 is 56.6% and 37.8%. The average diameters were 9 mm and 8 mm, respectively. On the other hand, for the other two varieties (Argomulyo and Wills), the seed grades were divided into three grades, namely G1, G2 and G3. On average, the percentage of G1 and seed diameter were 51.9% and 6.6 mm for Argomulyo and 14.6% and 5. for Wills. It was 1 mm. The G2 ratio and seed diameter for Argomulyo were 33.7% and 6.5 mm, while for Wills they were 23.8% and 6.0 mm. However, the ratio of G3 to Argomulyo and Wills was 14.4% and 56.15%, respectively, and the average seed diameters of both varieties were 6.4 mm and 4.8 mm, respectively. The indicators of seed homogeneity were similar for both types of seeds with a coarse: medium: fine ratio of 10: 0: 0, suggesting that the level of homogeneity reached 100%. However, on the other hand, the seed survival rate met the criteria for seed elongation (70%). On average, the seed viability of Grobogan, Argomulyo and Wills was 82.5%, 87.1% and 74.6%, respectively. With a price of Rp16 million / unit and a wage of two drivers with Rp150,000 per day, the cost of the ILETRI sorter is Rp52 / kg, the break-even point is 103t / year, and the rate of return is 6.0. In months, the net present value is Rp73.9 million, the profit-to-cost ratio is 1.67, and the internal rate of return is 199.8%. In conclusion, technically and economically, the ILETRI sorter has a beneficial prospect of being applied in soybean seed producers. The ILETRI soybean seed sorter is patented in Indonesia with patent number: S002012000 65. (Translation author abstract) Meet the criteria for seed elongation (70%).
